I wanted to share some thoughts that President Salas sent recently:
What do the Book of Mormon prophets mean when they refer to an “Infinite atonement” (2 Ne 9:7, 25:16; Alma 34:10,12)?
The phrase “Infinite atonement” or “Infinite sacrifice” may refer to an atonement or sacrifice by a God, a being who is infinite in knowledge, power and glory (Alma 34:14). Accordingly, the Atonement Is infinite because its Source is infinite. But the Atonement is infinite in other ways as well. The Atonement seems Infinite, as so designated by the Book of Mormon prophets, for at least the following eight reasons.:
1) Infinite in the divineness of the One who was sacrificed. D&C 20:17,28; 2 Ne 1:10; Mosiah 5:3; Helaman 12:1; Moroni 8:3; D&C 109:77
2) Infinite in power. D&C 93:17; 1 Ne 1:14; Alma 26:35; D&C 100:1; Juan 17:2; 19:10-11; Alma 12:15, 9:28; Mosiah 3:5; D&C 132:20
3) Infinite in time. It applies retroactively and prospectively through time immemorial. Mosiah 3:12,18; D&C 20:26
4) Infinite in coverage. It applies to all God's creations and all forms of life. D&C 29:24; 2 Ne 9:21, 8:6; Isaiah 51:6; D&C 88:26, 76:43; Headnotes D&C 76 verses 18-24
5) Infinite in depth. It is infinite not only in who it covers, but what it covers. D&C 122:8, 19:16; John 1:29; 3 Ne 11:11; 1st John 2:2, D&C 76:41; Mosiah 28:4; Alma 26:17, 24:11; D&C 88:6, 18:11, 76:43-44
6) Infinite in suffering, in the degree of suffering endured by the Redeemer. D&C 19:15,18; Hebreos 2:9; Luke 22:43; Matthew 26:39; Moses 7:55-56
7) Infinite in love. Alma 26:15; D&C 133:53; 1 Ne 19:9, 11:17; Romans 5:7-8; 1 Ne 21:15-16; John 15:13; Luke 22:42
8) Infinite in the blessings it bestows. Some of the blessings overlap, some complement and supplement each other, but in the aggregate the effect of this event so blesses our lives in a multiplicity of ways, both known and yet to be discovered, that it might appropriately be said to be infinite in its blessing nature.
