October 24, 2011, Cordoba, Argentina

Dear Family,

How are you? I am well—this week was also a week of changes in the
office, as Elder Bird arrived to replace Elder Ellsworth. Elder Bird
was in my MTC zone and got to Argentina a transfer after I did. He’ll
be staying here in the office with Elder Ellsworth for about a week,
to be trained, and then the latter will leave to some area unknown.
He’ll get to be the materials secretary this Christmas, so he’ll be
exceedingly busy! I’m excited to be working with him too, because he’s
a hard worker and we have similar attitudes and work ethics.

This week we waited on Tuesday for two new missionaries who had been
having visa problems to arrive, only to realize that they were
arriving on Wednesday, and then I got a call late at night from an
airport in Buenos Aires telling me that there were actually arriving
on Thursday, etc, but finally we received them. We also ran about
preparing for Argentine elections (yesterday), as all of our Argentine
missionaries had to formally declare that they couldn’t present
themselves to vote – this required that I find all of their
documentation and deliver it to them!

We taught Hector and Ruth again this week, and both of them came to
church! Hector even offered the prayer in our last lesson, and
declared that he wants to change and stop doing drugs. I showed them
the picture that you had sent me of the family in Raymond on July 1st,
to show them that one day they’re going to be grandparents, and
they’ll want to have a happy, united family. On Sunday that Gospel
Principles class was about eternal marriage, and the teacher (Hna.
Córdoba) asked, “So when are you getting married?” They responded that
they weren’t sure… and that it was a lot of commitment… etc, but were
promptly told by her that what did they mean by commitment and that if
their two children weren’t enough commitment and if they think that
marriage is the sealed guarantee of a continued perfect relationship,
etc, etc. Thus, we’re excited and hopeful that they’ll be married
soon.

Hope you are all well! Congratulations to dad – I’m sure that his new
calling will be an exciting opportunity to serve!

Love,

Elder David Schlachter
